National Eligibility cum Entrance Test 2020: Amid the clamour for cancellation and postponement of various board, college and university exams, and entrance tests in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, an interesting situation has emerged with regard to National Eligibility cum Entrance Test - UG (NEET 2020).
While a group of students and their parents living in Gulf has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking rescheduling of NEET 2020, another group in India has written to National Testing Agency (NTA) to hold the medical entrance test on its rescheduled date i.e. July 26, 2020.
According to the news agency ANI, the parents of several NEET candidates in the Middle East countries approached the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday seeking directions to postpone NEET 2020 in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As an alternative, the parents said NTA should establish exam centres in the Middle East for students appearing in NEET UG 2020 exam.
“The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for engineering courses in NITs and IITs is conducted by the NTA. These exams have got centres in foreign countries as well. The JEE is both an online and offline mode examination. The NTA has got expertise in conducting the entrance examinations abroad,” the petition said.
Earlier, a similar petition seeking directions to the government and National Testing Agency (NTA) to allot NEET centres overseas or postpone the exam until the COVID pandemic is eased was filed in the Kerala High Court.
The Kerala High Court had however dismissed the plea which was by Abdul Azees, General Secretary, Kerala Muslim Culture Centre, Qatar. During the hearing, the NTA and the Medical Council of India (MCI) had told the high court that arranging examination centers for NEET exams abroad is not practical.
On the other hand, a group of students and their parents has written a letter to National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct NEET UG on July 26, 2020. NEET was originally scheduled in May. It was however rescheduled on July 26 due to Covid-19 epidemic.
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), conducted by NTA, is held for admission in first year MBBS, BDS, BUMS, BHMS and other medical courses.
"Students are preparing for NEET since last two years so that they can get admission in a good college. They are already under stress which has been multiplied due to Corona scare. Repeated rescheduling and postponement of NEET will only add to the pain of the students", they said in their letter to NTA.
"The exam can be conducted following the social distancing and health guidelines to avoid direct contact. Hence we request you to conduct the exam on July 26", they said.
