Kuala Lumpur: As many as 40 Malaysians who tested positive for Coronavirus Sunday had attended the 4-day Tablighi Ijtema held at at Sri Petaling Mosque.
Malaysia’s Health Ministry Sunday announced that 190 people had tested positive for coronavirus, the highest number of infections reported in a day in the country.
“Based on early investigation, most of the new cases are linked to the Tabligh gathering at Sri Petaling Mosque,” Health Minister Dr. Adham Baba said in a statement on Sunday.
The Sri Petaling Mosque Tablighi Ijtema was held form Feb 28 to March 1. More than 15,000 people had attended the gathering. Of them some 14,500 were Malaysians and rest all came from other countries - some of them from neighboring Singapore and Brunei.
The new infections bring Malaysia’s total to 428, the highest number of reported coronavirus cases in Southeast Asia.
Singapore had last Friday suspended the Friday Congregation Prayers due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Meanwhile, Malaysian health authorities are trying to track down 14,500 nationals who attended the Tablighi Ijtema. The ministry has called on them and their close contacts to undergo virus testing and self-quarantine for 14 days.
On Thursday, the minister said that all mass gatherings should be avoided due to the coronavirus outbreak.
“Gatherings of more than 50 people are considered a mass gathering, so the public should avoid them,” he said.
Worldwide, the deadly disease has taken the lives of more than 5000 people - with China being worst affected with a toll of over 3000.
