Mumbai: About a lakh have signed two separate online petitions demanding the cancellation of Final Year University exams in Maharashtra, and the number is going up with every passing minute.
Asserting that academic career of the students are important but their health cannot be put to risk, those signed the petition demanded from the Maharashtra government to cancell the Final Year Exams and waive of students with submissions.
The online petitions started gathering support after Maharashtra’s Minister for Higher and Technical Education, Uday Samant last Friday announced that all First and Second year students will be promoted without exams. He also announced that the universities in the state will conduct exams only for the final year students.
The decision was taken in view of the nationwide lockdown clamped since Marh 24 to contain the spread of Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19).
"The health of all students is more important than their academics. However, we can't ignore the importance of academics and hence request you to assess us on our previous marks and give us a wealth of time and health for future accomplishments", students said in one online petition which has garnered the support from 48,112 people till the time this report was filed.
"All the final year students have already given 5 semesters (for 3-year courses) or 7 semesters (for 4-year courses) examinations. Also, in the majority of colleges intermediate semester exams are already conducted. All of these can help assess the overall performance of each student which could further be used to evaluate their graduate marks", the petition said.
"Hence, it is all of our sincere requests to kindly cancel the examination for final semester students", it added.
"Teachers are trying all they can by putting content on Google Classroom but no one is understanding even a bit. Therefore, there is an urgent need of cancellation of end semester exams", another petition started by Mumbai University students which has received 50,363 signs so far said.
There are a total of 20 universities in Maharashtra including Mumbai University, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Kolhapur University, North Maharashtra University Jalgaon, Marathwada University Aurangabad and others.
