How to offer Eid prayer at home

Eid al Fitr 2020: A number of countries of the world, including India, have announced Coronavirus lockdown during Eid al Fitr festival.

It means that Muslims will need to not only stay at home during the annual holiday but also offer Eid al Fitr prayers (namaz) at home - individually or with family members, and must not in congregation.

Eid prayer is normally offered in mosques, parks, open spaces and grounds called Eidgah. But, due to the lockdown announced to contain coronavirus outbreak it will not be possible to offer Eid prayers at Eidgah this year. Hence, religeous authorities and different organisations in various countries are issuing guideliines about how to offer Eid al fitr prayers at home. Here is a brief summary.

How to offer Eid al Fitr prayers at home

Eid al Fitr prayer at home will consist of two rakats with reciting more numbers of takbeer and without a sermon. Islamic scholars said Eid prayer could be performed individually or in congregation at home.

The worshiper will recite takbeer to start salat and then follow it with six more takbeer in the first rakat before reciting Surah Fatiha loudly and then it is ideal to recite Surah Al-Qaf. Other surah can also be recited.

In the second rakat, there will be five takbeer after the takbeer at the start of the rakat before starting to recite Surah Fatiha and then Surah Al-Qamar, following the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

It is also ideal to recite Surah Al-A’la and Al-Ghashiya instead of Al-Qaf and Al-Qamar in each rakat respectively.

Scholars cited the example of Anas Bin Malik, a prominent companion of the Prophet (pbuh). When Anas (May Allah be pleased with him), was at his home in Zawiya, a place near Basra, he did not find any Eid congregation prayer and therefore he performed prayer along with his family members and his aide Abdullah Bin Abi Otba.

Ideal time of Eid al Fitr prayer

Islamic scholars said that the time for Eid prayer begins after sunrise and the best time is after the sun rises by the height of one or two spears as agreed by most scholars.

This means 15 or 30 minutes after sunrise and its time continues until the end of the time of the Duha prayer - that is before the Zuhr prayer begins.

Regarding the recitation of takbeer on the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr, scholars said that it should begin during the night of the Eid and continue until the beginning of the Eid prayer.

Zakat al Fitr 2020

Muslims should also keep in mind that they have to pay Zakat al Fitr (Sidqa e Fitr) as per the tradition of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) while observing the festival amidst Covid lockdown.

Zakat al Fitr is compulsory on every Muslim - male and female including children. It has to be paid before the Eid al Fitr prayer. Best, if it is distributed to poor a day before Eid al Fitr after sighting of the Eid moon.

Eid al Fitr is celebrated on 1st of Shawwal. It coincides with the end of Ramadan - the holy month of fasting. Eid al Fitr this year is likely to be celebrated on May 24 or May 25, 2020 subject to the sighting of the moon of the month of Shawwal.
