Lucknow: Ashish Gupta, a Revenue Officer in Uttar Pradesh posted as Naib Tehsildar in Maudaha city of Hamirpur district of the state, has been suspended for embracing Islam even as the government ordered a probe into his religious conversion.
Ashish Gupta was removed from his post on Thursday and attached to the collectorate as an initial inquiry found him breaching the employee code, Hindustan Times reported citing officials.
“He (Ashish Gupta) has been removed from his post and attached to the collectorate fill further notice", ADM, Hamirpur Dr Arun Mishra said.
Mishra added that a report on his conduct had also been sent to the government.
The news that Ashish Gupta has converted to Islam and changes his name to Mohammad Yusuf after local Muslims found a “stranger” visiting the mosque and ardently daily mandatory prayers.
The curious locals later found the “stranger” was actually Maudaha Naib Tehsildar Ashish Gupta who has embraced Islam and changed his name to Mohammad Yusuf.
Realising the sensitivity of the matter as the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has strict laws against “forced religious conversion” the mosque's cleric alerted the police and district administration.
Even as the district administration was probing the matter, a complaint was filed against Ashish Gupta by his wife, Aarti Yagyasaini.
In her complaint Aarti Yagyasaini alleged that Gupta was forced to change his religion for marrying another woman named Rukhsar.
In her complaint lodged at the police station, Aarti alleged that Rukhsar's father, identified as Munna, along with a cleric from the mosque and several others, orchestrated the conversion on December 24, before the alleged forced wedding.
Taking note of the Aarti’s complaint, the Uttar Pradesh Police registered a case and arrested three persons, including the cleric, according to The Indian Express.
As of now this is unclear if Ashish Gupta was indeed forced to convert his religion. More details on what made him to convert to Islam is still not yet been disclosed.
