Maine goes Colorado way, blocks Trump from presidential ballot

Washington: The US state of Maine Thursday December 28, 2023 blocked Donald Trump from the presidential ballot over the former US President’s alleged involvement in the January 2021 Capitol riots.

The events of January 6, 2021 "occurred at the behest of, and with the knowledge and support of, the outgoing President”, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said in her ruling, according to AFP.

"The US Constitution does not tolerate an assault on the foundations of our government and (Maine law) requires me to act in response," she added.

Shenna Bellows, a Democrat, announced the ruling after presiding over an administrative hearing earlier this month about Trump’s eligibility for office. A bipartisan group of former state lawmakers filed the challenge against Trump, according to CNN.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung meanwhile has announced ro challenge the decision pronunced by Bellows.

In a statement Thursday, Cheung accused Bellows of being a “virulent leftist” who has now “decided to interfere in the presidential election.”

Maine is the second American state that found Trump ineligible for the 2024 US elections. The Colorado Supreme Court had earlier similarly disqualified Trump from the state’s ballot under the 14th Amendment’s insurrection ban.

However, taking a different view, the Michigan Supreme Court had ruled otherwise.

The U.S. Presidential Elections is slated to be held on November 04, 2024. Before that the Americans in 50 states will participate in the primary elections and indicate their preference for their party's candidate.

The rulings in Colorado and Maine if not revoked mean Trump’s name will not appear in the primary ballots of the two states.
