Lisbon: In a novel move to encourage local residents to enhance their educational qualification, the Portuguese government has announced salary bonus for acquiring bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

The lucrative initiative was originally announced by Prime Minister Antonio Costa in September last. But, the official confirmation outlining the rules and guidelines of the initiative was made through a statement released by the Portuguese government Friday.
“The bonus will last for the same duration as the respective study cycles”, the government said in its notification.
The government said, the scheme applies to all taxpayers residing in national territory, up to the age of 35, who have obtained a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree from higher education institutions of Portugal - public or private, in the years of 2023 and later.
"The benefits also apply to the same academic degrees obtained abroad, as long as they are recognised in Portugal”, the government said.
Furthermore, students who earned their academic degrees before 2023 can also benefit from the government scheme, provided that the number of years elapsed does not exceed the duration of their bachelor’s or master’s degree.
The government said that the benefit is specifically dedicated to individuals falling under Category A (dependent work) and Category B (self-employed workers), holding regulated tax and social security statuses.
Graduates and master’s degree holders who fulfil the required criteria will be entitled to an annual salary premium worth Euro 697 for each year of their bachelor’s degree and Euro 1,500 for each year of their master’s degree, the government said.
