Beijing: Chinese Journalist Dong Yuyu’s detention in an alleged espionage case has been extended by two months, a move decried by the National Press Club and the National Press Club Journalism Institute.
"We have learned through the family of Chinese journalist Yuyu Dong that his unjust detention has been extended two months. We had expected a verdict Dec. 27”, Eileen O'Reilly, President of the National Press Club, and Gil Klein, President of the National Press Club Journalism Institute said in a joint statement.
Dong Yuyu is a renowned Columnist and Editor for the Guangming Daily. He was arrested on February 21, 2022 while he was in a meeting with a Japanese diplomat at a restaurant in Central Beijing. He was later indicted on charges of espionage.
“This extension will now push Yuyu's detention beyond the anniversary date of his arrest in 2022. He will have been held for two years without being convicted of a crime”, the National Press Club said.
“This is outrageous. He has not seen or spoken to his family during that time. The lack of a conviction and continued detention extensions show this to be a political rather than a legal process”, the Chinese press club said.
In the National Press Club demanded from the Chinese government to release Yuyu.
"Great nations do not keep their citizens in prison like this. It is time for China to step up and release Yuyu to his family. Journalism is not a crime”, the National Press Club that was founded in 1908 and has 3,000 members representing nearly all major news organizations of China.
Known for writing liberal-leaning commentaries, Dong Yuyu also wrote articles for other foreign publications, including The New York Times Chinese website.
