Lucknow: In yet another instance showing rampant corruption in the Indian system, some university students filled their answer sheets writing Hindu religious slogan Jai Shree Ram, names of cricketers, details of popular music and song titles yet they pass with flying colours.
The incident is reported from Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, a state university in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.
The matter came to light after a former student of the varsity, Divyanshu Singh, filed an RTI request asking for re-evaluation of the answer books of four students of Pharmacy.
It was found that the answer sheets of the D.Pharma students were written with the slogan hailing Hindu god 'Jai Shri Ram' at many places and also the names of cricketers playing for India and other international teams.
Despite this all the four students were awarded more than 50 per cent marks, the RTI revealed. On re-checking the answer books, the students were awarded zero marks.
"There was an allegation that students have been given more marks. So we constituted a committee. That Committee in its report said that students have been awarded more marks," Vice-Chancellor Vandana Singh said, according to NDTV.
Asked about the religious slogans, she said:
"Have not seen the copy with Jai Shri Ram answers but saw a copy in which I could not make out anything relevant based on which marks could be given to the student. The handwriting was not very clear."
Sources said that the former student, who had filed the RTI, sent the details to the Prime Minister, Chief Minister and the State Governor, who was the Chancellor of the University, demanding a thorough probe into the same.
Consequently, the Governor House in a letter written the Vice-Chancellor of the University directed her to take the necessary action.
Two professors of the university have been suspended, according to India Today.
It is alleged that the suspended teachers were found extorting money from the students in exchange of marks on answer sheets written with songs, music and religious slogans.
