Heavy rains lash Oman, Dubai; Flooding, devastation seen everywhere

Muscat/Dubai: Flooding, waterlogging and devastation are seen everywhere after heavy rains lashed part of the Gulf region with Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) being the worst affected.

Oman has reported at least 18 dead due to flash flood whereas authorities in the UAE have been asked to work from home because of the tough weather condition.

Schoolchildren among dead

As many as nine students and their driver died when their vehicle was washed away by the floodwaters in Samad Al Shan, an archaeological site located in Ash Sharqiyah Governorate, Oman, Sunday, according to Al Jazeera.

The government announced a day off for the administrative staff in public and private sectors due to the bad weather conditions in several provinces of Oman, while remote work was recommended in other parts of the Sultanate.

The National Committee for Emergency Management of Oman said rescue teams are still searching for those missing.

“As part of the efforts of the search teams of the civil defence and ambulance department in North Ash Sharqiyah governorate, and with the support of other parties and citizens, a missing person was found dead. Search efforts are still ongoing for three other people, including a child,” The Khaleej Times reported citing the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA).

Dubai waterlogged

Major highways in Dubai were flooded with water and streets turned into rivers after heavy rains lashed the city leaving vehicles abandoned on roadways across Dubai.

The rains began overnight, leaving massive ponds on streets as whipping winds disrupted flights at Dubai international airport. Video footage shared online shows aeroplanes floating in water.

The UAE reported record-breaking rainfall on April 16, 2024 with the National Centre of Meteorology recording 254 mm of rainfall in less than 24 hrs in the “Khatm Al Shakla” area in Al Ain, according to The Khaleej Times.

The rainfall was the highest documented since the start of data collection in 1949, the English daily said.

There are reports of at least one death in the UAE because of the flash flood.
