UAE announces crackdown on illegal digital platforms teaching Holy Quran

Abu Dhabi: Alarmed by the mushrooming digital platforms teaching Holy Quran, authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has vowed to impose strictly the law that requires licence to offer any such activities.

Quran recitation is an art that requires training from experts. Muslims regard recitation of Quran in high esteem, and with the surge of internet and social media, people have inclined to seek online help for correct Quran recitation.

Taking advantage of rising people interest in Quran learning, a number of digital platforms have suddenly occupied the online space.

This alarming trend forced the authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to announce crackdown on unlicensed online platforms offering skill in Quran recitation and memorisation.

As reported by Khaleej Times, conducting Quran classes and religious lectures without a license from the competent authority can result in a severe penalty of two months or more in jail and a fine of up to Dirham 50,000.

The authorities said the digital platforms often recruit unqualified individuals without necessary religious qualification, leading to incorrect teaching, misinterpretation of holy books, and potential misunderstandings about Islamic teachings.

People are also advised to report any suspicious or unlicensed teaching activities to the authorities to prevent the spread of unqualified religious education providers.

The advisory issued by the UAE’s General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (Awqaf) for citizens and residents on social media platform X is aimed at ensuring the accuracy and appropriateness of religious education to safeguard the younger generation.
