Modi takes oath as PM for 3rd term but with reduced power

New Delhi: Narendra Modi of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunday June 09, 2024 took oath as Prime Minister for a third term but with reduced power as compared to his last two terms.

The BJP failed to win enough seat needed to form a government in New Delhi though it emerged as the single largest party with 240 seats.

A minimum of 273 MPs are necessary to form a government with simple majority.

Hence the BJP, which had 303 MPs in the last Lok Sabha, is relying on the support from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD (U) and Andhra Pradesh CM designate Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and other smaller parties that are part of the NDA.

Along with Modi, 71 MPs also took oath as ministers. Of them, 33 are Cabinet Ministers, 05 are ministers with independent charge, and 36 are Ministers of State (Mos).
