Kathmandu: Nepal, the Himalayan State, Wednesday August 26, 2026 suffered devastating flash flood, leaving several dead and some 500 missing, over 100 of them are Indians tourists.
The flash flood Wednesday was triggered by a rock slide near the Nepal-Tibet border, badly damaging a dozen hydropower projects and washing away several bridges in Rasuwa, Dhading, Nuwakot, and Chitawan districts.
Nepal Flash Flood Death Toll
As many as 95 people have been found dead in the flash flood in the Bhote Koshi River in Nepal, police said.
Abi Narayan Kafle, spokesperson of Nepal Police, confirmed to Xinhua, adding that 41 injured people have been receiving treatment in different hospitals.
Local media is reporting that the floods wreaked havoc in several parts of Nepal, sweeping away a number of villages and leaving bridges and power plants destroyed. The government has deployed army and the rescue operation is on to trace the missing people.
The massive flood entered into Trishuli river through Bhote Koshi in Timure due to the rock slide and swelling Lhende river situated in Nepal-Tibet border, said the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Nepal.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority further warned that the risk persists in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli areas as the river blockage site has not yet been fully drained.
Worst Affected Areas
Rasuwa, about 125 kms northeast of Kathmandu, situated near the Tibet border, is the worst affected by the flash flood.
Videos shared on social media revealed the scale of the devastation, purportedly at Rasuwagadhi in Nepal-China Border where a massive wall of gushing water could be seen overriding a two-storey building and washing away everything it covered.
Scores of people could be seen running away first, apparently at the sound of approaching water, but within seconds are covered by mud and debris left behind by the flash flood.
As many as 384 tourists, including 291 foreigners, have been reported missing after a massive flash flood swept through north Nepal's Rasuwa district, the Nepal Tourism Board said on Wednesday.
Sunil Sharma, spokesperson at the board, said the missing foreign tourists are from India, Australia, the Netherlands, the United States, Malaysia, Britain and South Africa, among others, news agency Xinhua reported.
"Shocked, Deeply Distressed"
Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah said that he was left with a "heavy heart" after the country's fatal flash floods.
"The entire nation has been left shocked and deeply distressed" by the loss of life and damage to property, he says in a social media post, calling the disaster "sudden" and "massive".
Shah offered "heartfelt tributes" and "deepest condolences" to those who have lost their lives and their loved ones, BBC reported.
Shah said that the government "immediately mobilised all its resources" for rescue operations "without delay".
