New Delhi: The Congress Party Tuesday September 01, 2026 while refuting the Narendra Modi government’s 7.8% GDP Growth claim, said the data provided by the present dispensation has lost credibility.
Salman Soz, Congress Spokesperson and Economic Development Consultant who earlier worked with the World Bank, said the data provided by the erstwhile Indian governments had always been treated with respect and high regards. The same is not the case nowadays, he said.
“(during my tenure at World Bank) I never ever encountered a problem with India’s data… Not once”, he said while addressing the media at Congress headquarters in New Delhi Tuesday.
“Chinese data… Yes.. We used to doubt… But no one ever questioned India’s data. But, now India’s data does not have the same credibility”, he added.
Salman Soz was addressing the Congress Press Briefing called to analyse the Narendra Modi government’s latest data claiming the Indian GDP is growing at an impressive 7.8% rate.
Modi Government Data on GDP Growth
The Nrendra Modi government claimed despite persistent geopolitical tensions and uncertainty around global trade, India's real GDP grew by 7.8% in Q1 2026-27.
"The outcome marked the highest Q1 real GDP growth during the four-year period from 2023-24 to 2026-27. This has been supported by buoyant domestic demand and gains in manufacturing and services", the government said.
The Modi government said the real GDP, or GDP at Constant Prices, is estimated at ₹81.36 lakh crore in Q1 FY 2026-27, recording 7.8% rise, compared with 6.9% in Q1 FY 2025-26.
On the other hand, nominal GDP, or GDP at Current Prices, is estimated at ₹88.27 lakh crore, recording 10.3% rise, compared with 8.1% last year.
In a statement released today, the Union Government also mentioned that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has highlighted India’s role in the global economy, adding S&P Global Ratings In August 2026 affirmed India’s ‘BBB/A-2’ sovereign ratings with a Stable Outlook.
Following the release of the latest GDP data, Prime Minister also posted an Instagram video calling the Indians to celebrate the country’s growth story.
“Ground Realties Tell a Different Story”
Salman Soz while addressing the media said that the ground realties in the country tells a totally different story.
“There are no jobs. Inflation is at alarmingly high level. Investment from the private sector has dried up. People are suffering and they want us to celebrate”, he said.
“The latest GDP numbers present a greatly distorted picture. If the GDP growth is indeed 7.8% then why the impact is not seen at the grass root?” he asked.
Salman Soz also said that India’s economy right now is “lopsided economy”.
“There is a serious problem with the economic structure of the country. Instead of addressing this issue, the government is focused more on optics”, he said.
Salman also questioned the government’s claim of 2.3% inflation and said the sufferings of the people reveal the inflation at a much higher level.
“And when this is the case then the GDP growth rate must not be what the government wants us to believe”, he said.
Highlighting the importance of higher GDP, Salman said, “But more important is that the growth should be shared and uniform.”
“The fact is that the current economic structure is benefitting some 5% only whereas the vast majority of Indians are suffering”, he said.
“If the GDP Growth rate is indeed 7.8% then why we are providing free rations to 80 crore Indians?” he asked adding, “This is the time for all of us to admit that the current government has badly failed us.”
