Hyderabad: The Telangana bandh called by the Joint Action Committee comprising major political parties and apolitical organisations to press the Centre to announce a specific time schedule for creating a separate Telangana state, began on a peaceful note this morning.

Normal life was paralaysed as the Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation withdrew all its services, while the South Central Railway cancelled as many as 165 trains and rescheduled long distance trains leaving passengers stranded, official sources said.

Curfew-like situation prevailed in most places in the 10 districts of Telangana including Hyderabad, as authorities deployed central para military forces and armed forces from neighbouring states in large numbers to assist the state police in maintaining law and order.

Central forces were deployed in strength at all important Central Government offices and vital installations, including industrial estates as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incidents.

Arterial roads in the state capital lashed by early morning rains, wore a deserted look.

Major political parties in the region including the ruling Congress, Opposition Telugu Desam Party(TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samiti(TRS) and the BJP announced support for the bandh and appealed to the people to ensure that the bandh was peaceful and successful.
