New Delhi:
Along with the Ministry of Human and
Resource Development and various state governments in the country,
educational institutions at all levels across the country will
celebrate November 11 as the 'National Education Day', commemorating
the birthday of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, an eminent educationist
and the first Union Minister of Education of independent India.
Seminars,
symposia, essay-writing, elocution competitions, workshops and
rallies with banner cards and slogans on the importance of literacy
and nation's commitment to all aspects of education will be
organized in educational institutions across the country on the
National Education Day.
As India's
Education Minister, Azad oversaw the establishment of a national
education system with free primary education and modern institutions
of higher education.
He is also
credited with the foundation of the University Grants Commission (UGC),
an important institution to supervise and advance higher education
in the nation.
Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) is also all set to
celebrate the National Education Day on November 11 to commemorate
the birth anniversary of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, an eminent
educationist and Independent India's first education minister.
"As education
minister, Azad oversaw the establishment of a national education
system with free primary education and modern institutions of higher
education. Bihar, in fact, became the first state in the country to
initiate a move to celebrate Education Day in his memory in 2007.
Later, in 2008, government of India also decided to observe November
11 as National Education Day," said HRD principal secretary Anjani
Kumar Singh.
The Ministry of
Human Resource Development, had on September 11, 2008 announced,
"The Ministry has decided to commemorate the birthday of this great
son of India by recalling his contribution to the cause of education
in India. November 11 every year, from 2008 onwards, will be
celebrated as the National Education Day, without declaring it a
holiday".
The Ministry's
announcement further said, "The focus of activities on the 'National
Education Day' would be on the various initiatives taken under the
Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA); in setting up model schools in
secondary education; on the various initiatives taken in higher
secondary education; and in vocational and higher education sectors
by the Central Government on its own; and in partnership with state
governments, as well as through private public partnership".
"These initiatives
would be projected in association with various industry bodies,
whose fullest cooperation also would be sought in the development of
human resources in the country", it added.
The Central Board
of Secondary Education (CBSE) has also asked all its affiliated
schools to celebrate the day in a befitting manner by organizing
various activities like seminars, symposia, essay writing, elocution
competitions etc.
The state HRD has
acquired 800 sq feet area at Gandhi Maidan and four pavalions have
been constructed where various cultural programmes, including
sports, quiz and slogans on importance of literacy and state's
commitment to education will be held. The entire event will showcase
the "Mukhyamantri Akshar Anchal Yojana", a scheme which aims to make
40,00,000 women literate. This apart, the main focus of the
programme will be on women empowerment and literacy, said HRD
sources.
Apart from the HRD department, the Bihar Education Project (BEP) has
also organized several programmes for the education day at the same
venue focussing on girls education, said Ravi Shankar Sinha,
programme officer, BEP.
For the first time cultural programmes will be presented and
announcements will be made at the pavalions in five regional
languages-Maithili, Bhojpuri, Angika, Vajjika and Magahi.
Chief minister
Nitish Kumar and deputy CM Sushil Modi will jointly inaugurate the
function on Wednesday, while governor Devanand Konwar will conclude
the ceremony on Thursday.
Altogther 16 students of Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB), who
have made it to IIT-JEE, would be awarded the Bihar Guarav Samman,
said HRD minister Hari Narayan Singh.
It may be mentioned here that Maulana Azad is also credited with the
foundation of the University Grants Commission (UGC), an important
institution to supervise and advance higher education in the
country.
