Chennai:
How does one differentiate between a swine flu and a common flu case
through symptoms? This was one of the questions that were raised by
doctors at a workshop in the city on Tuesday.
They
were told that fever precedes the cold in the case of swine flu;
while the fever normally follows the cold if it is common flu.
The
training conducted by the Chennai Corporation for doctors from
private hospitals and clinics saw an overwhelming response with over
500 medical practitioners, including those working in government
hospitals, eagerly participating in the discussions and getting
their doubts clarified on treating swine flu patients.
In
response to a query on the kind of mask that should be suggested to
patients and how effective was each kind of mask, Corporation Health
Officer Dr P Guhanantham replied that even a thick paper mask would
do.
Several doctors wondered at what stage of the treatment a patient
should be referred to a government hospital.
“Will we get a free supply of Tamiflu?” asked one while another
wanted to know the dosage.
When
a few doctors expressed apprehensions over centralised
airconditioning increasing the chances of the virus spreading, Dr
Guhanantham agreed and said that it was not advisable for IT
companies, hospitals and other organisations to have centralised AC.
“If you do have AC, please make sure the air filters are cleaned
because a single filter can harbour at least 1,000 viruses at a
time,” he added.
There were also concerns about the safety of doctors and the
paramedical staff handling the swine flu patients with queries on
the precautionary measures that should be taken while dealing with
suspected cases.
Then there were questions on who should be given
prophylaxis.
