MANGALORE:
Muslim Forum staged a massive protest infront of a Deputy
Commissioner's office at around 3:30 pm. to pay homage to the
murdered human rights advocate Naushad Kashimji and to protest
against his brutal killing. In a five-point resolution, the
organisers condemned the death of Kashimji and conferred martyrdom
on him. They vowed to intensify the stir if the Police Department
failed to arrest the culprits by April 30. Muslim Forum demanded
that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation
and the police officers accused by senior advocate K. Purshotham
Poojary of murdering Kashimji be removed from the team which is
investigating the case.
Inaugurating the meeting K L Ashok
said, the role of police officials, underworld criminals and
political leaders has been prima facie proved in this case. Naushad
always fought for justice and protection of human rights. He said:
“The freedom we achieved in 1947 has fallen prey to the bullet of a
criminalised police force that targets human rights activists.”
Apprehending that the life of such activists in the State are in
danger under the BJP government, Mr. Ashok said: “We will not allow
Karnataka to become another Gujarat.
Popular Front of India national
general secretary K M Sharif said Naushad's murder is a threat and
challenge to the judicial system of India. Progressive and secular
individuals and organisations have to fight against this tendency,
otherwise, there may be several such murders in future, he warned.
He also said: “As a lawyer, he saved several lives and prevented
fake encounters by the police through legal means,”
On this occasion, several prominent
speakers including Rafiuddin Kudroli (President New Age India Forum,
Mangalore), Prof Umesh Chandra (Lecturer Mangalore University),
Muhammed Kunhi (Manager Shanti Prakashan, Mangalore), S B Muhammed
Darimi (President, Darimis Association, South Kanara), Y Muhammed
Kunji (President District Waqf committee), Shaafi Saadi Nandavar
(Secretary Saadi Education Trust, Bangalore), B Muhammed Haji
Muhiddin (President Seerat Committee, Mangalore) were also addressed
the crowd who were gathered from different parts of the district.
