Muslims in Gujarat face the worst political dilemma

MANGALORE: Muslim Forum staged a massive protest infront of a Deputy Commissioner's office at around 3:30 pm. to pay homage to the murdered human rights advocate Naushad Kashimji and to protest against his brutal killing. In a five-point resolution, the organisers condemned the death of Kashimji and conferred martyrdom on him. They vowed to intensify the stir if the Police Department failed to arrest the culprits by April 30. Muslim Forum demanded that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation and the police officers accused by senior advocate K. Purshotham Poojary of murdering Kashimji be removed from the team which is investigating the case.

The programme began with the recitation of Quran by Ishaque Puttur. Mr K L Ashok, (General Secretary of Karnataka Komu Soharda Vedike), inaugurated the programme and Anwar Saadat, co-convener of the Federation presented the introductory remarks. He said, no justice could be expected from the police, as they are puppets in the hands of Sangh Parivar outfits, which are at the helm of affairs in the government. Referring to the police denial of receiving a complaint filed by Naushad's senior Advocate Purushotham Poojary against certain police officials, he said this claim of theirs is on the one hand and appointing the very same officials to investigate the case gives rise to serious suspicion. He also alleged that some sections of the media and the police force were conspiring to tarnish the image of Kashimji and justify his killing. Citing various police encounters Mr. Saadath said people were losing faith in the police.

Inaugurating the meeting K L Ashok said, the role of police officials, underworld criminals and political leaders has been prima facie proved in this case. Naushad always fought for justice and protection of human rights. He said: “The freedom we achieved in 1947 has fallen prey to the bullet of a criminalised police force that targets human rights activists.” Apprehending that the life of such activists in the State are in danger under the BJP government, Mr. Ashok said: “We will not allow Karnataka to become another Gujarat.

Naushad preferred to fight crucial cases related to death of Padmapriya, Udupi MLA K Raghupathi Bhat's wife, death of Mulky Rafique in a police encounter and this earned him enemies. He also said, It is strange that police officials, involvement of whom is suspected in Naushad's murder have been appointed as the investigating officers.

Popular Front of India national general secretary K M Sharif said Naushad's murder is a threat and challenge to the judicial system of India. Progressive and secular individuals and organisations have to fight against this tendency, otherwise, there may be several such murders in future, he warned. He also said: “As a lawyer, he saved several lives and prevented fake encounters by the police through legal means,”

On this occasion, several prominent speakers including Rafiuddin Kudroli (President New Age India Forum, Mangalore), Prof Umesh Chandra (Lecturer Mangalore University), Muhammed Kunhi (Manager Shanti Prakashan, Mangalore), S B Muhammed Darimi (President, Darimis Association, South Kanara), Y Muhammed Kunji (President District Waqf committee), Shaafi Saadi Nandavar (Secretary Saadi Education Trust, Bangalore), B Muhammed Haji Muhiddin (President Seerat Committee, Mangalore) were also addressed the crowd who were gathered from different parts of the district.

More than ten thousand strong crowd participated in the demonstration and a memorandum was submitted to the District Magistrate demanding fair investigation by handing over the case to CBI.

Zameer Ambar, (Convenor South Kanara Muslim Forum), presided over the function and Ali Hassan presented vote of thanks. The function was concluded in the evening.

Sare Jahan Se Accha

Hindustan Hamara

In 1905 more than 100 years from today, when Iqbal was a lecturer at the Government College, Lahore he was invited by his student Lala Hardayal to preside over a function. Instead of making a speech, Iqbal sang Sare Jahan Se Accha Hindustan Hamara in his style. Iqbal compiled this poem in praise of India and the poem preaches the communal harmony that had unfortunately started ceasing in India by that time. Each and every word in this poem depicts an Indian’s respect and love for the motherland and the values the Indian society inherited for long...Read Full
