Country's first govt. school bus services launched

Thursday, April 22, 2010 08:03:20 PM, UNI

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Home-cum-Transport Secretary Ram Niwas today flagged off Indias first Government School Bus Project Micro School Escort at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector-16.

The Scheme will be implemented in five schools--- Government Senior Secondary Schools, Sector-16, 18, 19, 28 and 35.

An agreement has been signed between the transport operator and the PTA in-charge/Management Committee for each school.

In all, 9 buses will be flagged off covering a total of 500 students. The transporter will be responsible for collection of transport charges at the rate of Rs 400 per student on monthly basis.

The buses have been equipped with speed governor, first aid kits, fire extinguishers and fulfil all other conditions of the Motor Vehicle Act.

The Project was initiated with a view to curb the illegal operation of the transporters who were otherwise, not fulfilling the provisions of Motor Vehicle Act.

Moreover, the scheme was viewed as a facilitation support for the school children of Government Schools that do not have the facility of Pick and drop service just like the private/public schools.

Hence, necessity was felt to introduce bus service so as to provide relief to the school going children who mainly belong to lower and middle sections of the society and who cannot afford hefty transport charges as compared to the private schools.

This is aimed at reducing the burden of the parents, reduce the traffic chaos in the morning and evenings and also to ensure safety/security of the children.
