Prez directs AMU to put court meeting in abeyance

Friday December 17, 2010 10:16:57 PM, PTI

Aligarh: President Pratibha Patil today directed the Aligarh Muslim University to put the crucial meeting of the AMU Court on December 19 in abeyance.

A group of current and former Members of Parliament had earlier appealed to Prathiba Patil, as the Visitor of the University, to postpone the scheduled meeting of the court.

The President also has issued a notice to the University under Section 13 of the AMU Act to explain as to how this crucial meeting of the Court was being held. The meeting would elect the university's next Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, Treasurer and six members of the University executive council.

The group had alleged that vice-chancellor P K Abdul Azis had deliberately scheduled the meeting on December 19, when a large number of the members will be attending the session of All India Congress Committee, to influence elections.
