Malegaon: Tension prevails in and around Malegaon, after dead cows were found near Manmad highway today early in the morning. Shops had to down their shutters and schools closed as soon as the news spread in the town like a wildfire.
It was a usual day in Malegaon, the Muslim dominated textile town in North Maharashtra. Streets abuzz with hectic activities and powerlooms running at their optimal speed. It was then that the reports began taking rounds in entire Malegaon that dead cows are found at various places along the Manmad highway, few kilometers to the actual town. The reports were later confirmed by the officials.
"Eight dead cows are found at different places along the Manmad highway", said Additional Collector Yeshwant Sonawane.
While two of the eight dead cows were found in the farm house near the petrol pump at Manmad Chawfully, rest were found lying at other places along the highway.
'Violent Protests'
As soon as the news spread in the town, people allegedly belonging to Shiv Sena and BJP took control of the streets and shouting slogans, forced the shops to close. Later, they assembled at Mumbai-Agra road and jammed the traffic for more than few hours.
Even as police force led by Additional Collector Yeshwant Sonawane and Additional SP Ashok Chougale rushed to the spot, angry mob, demanding action against the culprits, was seen pelting stones at the vehicles and burning tyres on the roads. The mob also smashed the glasses of a State board bus and some other vehicles including the fire brigade owned by the local civic body. The driver of the fire brigade is injured in the incident.
Reports of protests are also coming from neighboring towns including Manmad, Nandgaon, Kalwan and other adjoining areas. However, the situation in and around Malegaon, and in these towns are fast coming to the normal, claim the police officials.
'Investigations on'
Within hours of the incident, District Collector P. Velrasu and SP Nashik Milind Bhambre rushed to Malegaon and joined the local officials.
Meanwhile, mystery surrounds over the manner in which the dead cows are found on the highway. Preliminary investigations say, while there are no wounds on seven cows, the last one has some kind of wounds.
"Investigations into the entire incident is on and we are also conducting post-mortem of the dead cows to find the exact reason of their deaths", said SDO Malegaon Ajay More.
