Gandhinagar: The CBI on Sunday arrested former Gujarat minister Amit Shah in Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case after he appeared before the agency for questioning here.
46-year-old Shah, who earlier made a dramatic appearance before the media at the BJP state headquarters in Ahmedabad after having evaded CBI summons in the case since Thursday, drove to the agency's office here accompanied by BJP state office-bearers.
Waving to the mediapersons after alighting from his car at the CBI office, he found that officers of the probe agency were waiting for him.
"The CBI officials told Shah that they will take him straight to the court to which he agreed," BJP leader Vijay Rupani, who accompanied Shah, said.
He was whisked in a car from the CBI office to the residence of Judicial Magistrate A Y Dave by the agency officials, including IG P Kandaswamy. He was taken to magistrate's house as courts were closed today, sources in the CBI said.
Shah has been charged by CBI for kidnapping and murder of alleged gangster Soharabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausar Bi in 2005.
Later, Shah was presented before Judicial Magistrate A Y Dave at his residence.
As the CBI did not press for his custody he was sent to judicial custody till August 7.
BJP supporters gathered in large numbers outside the house of judicial magistrate and shouted slogans against CBI while the proceedings were on.
'Congress has no role'
Meanwhile, Union Human Resource Minister Kapil Sibal said the Congress has nothing to do with the CBI naming former Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah as an accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.
"Congress has not made Shah an accused, it is the CBI which has chargsheeted the former Gujarat minister. CBI has made Shah an accused so he should follow the legal course and tell the court whatever he has to say," Sibal told reporters.
