RTE, actually a law to ‘Eradicate Education’: Wali Rahmani
New Delhi: Delhi High Court has issued notices to Delhi Government to explain by August 5 as to why several state-run schools are denying admissions to students on frivolous grounds.
Justice Rajeev Sahai Endlaw today directed the Education department to ensure that a responsible officer is appointed to reply on the next date of hearing as to why state-run schools are not admitting children in their schools.
Eight girl students have approached the High Court complaining that the Government schools have unconstitutionally, illegally and in violation of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act, 2009) denied admission to them without assigning any reason.
The students Firdosh, Rabia, Gulafshah, Nisha Parveen, Rakhi Jain, Ritika Jain, Uzma Bano and Samreen Bano approached the Court through their lawyer Ashok Agarwal, seeking direction against the Delhi Government for denying admission to them in schools near their homes.
Two girls were denied admission in class VI in Sarvodaya Kanya Bal Vidyalaya, Babar Pur, only on the ground that they belonged to another state and had migrated from Uttar Pradesh.
Some were denied admission on the pretext of non-availability of seats and some on the grounds that re-admission is not possible.
School dropouts of poor families are treated in a manner as if the Government is not concerned about its citizens, Mr Agrawal said.
While the Government has brought about the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009 which ensures free and compulsory education to students upto 14 years, the parents had to run from pillar to post seeking admission for children.
