Mumbai: Chief
Minister Prithviraj Chavan was Wednesday declared elected
unopposed to the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
Last week, the opposition, including the Shiv Sena, decided
against challenging Chavan, facilitating his unopposed election.
Chavan, who was a union minister in the Prime Minister's Office,
took over as the Maharashtra chief minister six months ago, and
had to be elected to either house of the state legislature to
continue in the post.
Wednesday was the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers
and Chavan was the only candidate for the seat vacated by Sanjay
Dutt, a Congress leader.
Chavan took over the reins from Ashok Chavan who quit last
November after the Adarsh society scam where flats meant for war
widows were sold to high-profile politicians and bureaucrats.
