tale of an HIV negative man's ordeal in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur: A man's
life has become an unimaginable misery since being erroneously
diagnosed as HIV positive a decade ago at a Malaysian hospital.
A. Nageswara's life turned a living nightmare after a botched test
in 2001. He says he has been compelled by circumstances since then
to live away from his wife and five children.
"Being thought of as a HIV positive was very embarrassing.
"I was too ashamed to see my friends or family," The Star Online
quoted Nageswara as saying Friday.
Nageswara says he had to struggle for many years to convince his
family that he wasn't infected with HIV.
"They didn't believe me when I told them I was HIV negative after
going for further tests six months later. They did not let me come
back," he said.
He periodically stayed in touch with his family. But only saw them
once in 2007 at his sister-in-law's house in Kuala Lumpur.
"By 2008, I was also reluctant to contact them as I had no money
and was unable to support them," he said.
Stating that his family felt convinced about his being HIV
negative only a few years ago, Nageswara rues the fact that his
children grew up without him by their side.
"My eldest is now 25. I missed 10 years of their life," he said.
Nageswara, a former salesman, said that he has been constantly
moving around peninsular Malaysia, taking up whatever jobs he
could.
"I worked as a lorry driver and used car salesman, among others,"
he said.
Despite winning the suit he filed against Adventist Hospital and
Clinic Services (M) Sdn Bhd and being awarded RM150,000 in
damages, Nageswara received a paltry amount for what he suffered
all these years.
"I'm very sad. It is very little money. I will keep RM20,000 for
myself to open a used car dealership.
"The rest will be given to my family," he said.
He says there is no happy ending yet for him as yet.
After so many years, Nageswara was supposed to have a reunion with
his family Thursday morning. But luck didn't favour him this time
again. The family backed out at the last moment.
Nageswara says he plans to stay in Kuala Lumpur and will still try
his best to reunite with his family.
