London/Tokyo: "Suddenly the ground started to shake...I
gradually realised this was the huge one we expected for years,"
said a Tokyo resident after a massive earthquake hit Japan Friday.
Natsuki Morikubo told the BBC: "Suddenly the ground started to
shake and I thought I felt sick or something, but I gradually
realised this was the huge one we expected for years."
A magnitude-8.9 earthquake hit northeastern Japan Friday,
generating tsunami waves as high as 10 metres that hit the coast
of Miyagi prefecture.
At least six people were killed, 20 injured and many were missing,
including a number of children who were sucked into the sea.
Yukiko, another Tokyo resident, said when the quake struck she was
in her fourth floor apartment.
"I first thought it was just the usual moderate quake we have from
time to time. Then it started shaking really violently. I've
always lived in Tokyo, but I've never felt such a big quake in my
life," Yukiko was quoted as saying.
