Hisar (Haryana): Kuldeep Singh Bishnoi of the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) got an
early lead of about 32,000 votes while the Congress' Jai Prakash
was trailing in third position as counting was under way Monday
for the parliamentary by-election in Hisar in Haryana.
Ajay Singh Chautala of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) was in
second position in the election that has been under the spotlight
after Anna Hazare and his team stepped in to ask people to vote
against the Congress. Chautala is the son of former chief minister
Om Prakash Chautala.
Bishnoi, son of former chief minister Bhajan Lal, also has the
support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for this election. The
Hisar seat fell vacant in June following the death of Bhajan Lal,
a three-time chief minister.
Jai Parkash, a three-time MP, was trailing in the third spot. The
anti-Congress campaign by Team Anna also affected the prospects of
the party, analysts said.
The election, held on Oct 13, witnessed 70 percent polling. About
9.3 lakh voters (nearly 70 percent) of 13.32 lakh registered
voters had voted.
Results will be announced by Monday afternoon.
There were around 40 candidates, majority of them independent, in
Hisar.
Tight security arrangements have been made to ensure smooth
conduct of counting.
"No unauthorised person is allowed in a radius of 500 meters from
all counting centres. Besides, police and paramilitary forces are
deployed to keep the situation under control," said Haryana chief
electoral officer Sumita Misra.
In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, Bhajan Lal of HJC got 2.48 lakh
votes. He was followed by INLD's Sampat Singh (2.41 lakh votes).
Congress' Jai Parkash had stood third with 2.04 lakh votes.
