British woman gives birth in helicopter

Tuesday December 11, 2012 09:37:27 PM, IANS

London: A woman in Britain Tuesday gave birth in a helicopter flying at a height of 1,000 feet after being unable to get to hospital in time from her remote island home.

A rescue helicopter crew was called to take the woman from Unst in the far north of Scotland to a hospital, but the crew ended up delivering the boy themselves, the Telegraph reported.

The baby was delivered by winchman paramedic Marcus Wigfull, at 1,000 feet over a small island called Lunna Holm.

"This is the first time that a baby has been delivered on the Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Sumburgh in the Shetland Islands," an official told the daily.
