New Delhi: Around one-third of the total 100
ministers in the poll-bound states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand,
Punjab, Goa and Manipur have criminal charges pending against
them, according to a data released Tuesday by an election
watchdog.
"RTI (Right to Information) responses from five states showed 33
percent of 100 ministers in the five states have self-declared
pending criminal charges as per their affidavits filed in previous
assembly polls," said the study by the National Election Watch and
the Association for Democratic Reforms.
According to the report, Uttar Pradesh has the maximum percentage
of ministers (46 percent) with pending criminal cases. Of this, 30
percent ministers have serious criminal cases like murder and
attempt to murder pending against them.
Punjab has 39 percent followed by Uttarakhand with 33 percent
ministers facing criminal cases.
While Goa has eight percent ministers with pending criminal
charges, Manipur has no criminal cases pending against any
minister.
