London: An
aeroplane-style vacuum toilet can help turn human waste into
electricity and fertilisers.
The No-Mix Vacuum Toilet, which uses vacuum suction technology
like aeroplane toilets, splits human waste into solids and
liquids, Daily mail reported Thursday.
Liquid waste is processed for chemicals such as phosophorous for
fertilisers, and solid waste is processed to create "biogas" to
replace natural gas for cooking.
Wang Jing-Yuan, of Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU),
said: "With our innovative toilet system, we can use simpler and
cheaper methods of harvesting the useful chemicals and even
produce fuel and energy from waste."
Flushing takes up to 90 percent less water than a conventional
loo.
The loo took 18 months to develop and, following trials in
restrooms, people could be sat on it within three years, the
newspaper said.
The loo is due to be unveiled at a convention in Singapore next
week.
