Reaching out through community policing in Kashmir

Monday March 05, 2012 12:38:36 PM, IANS

Jammu: A new concept of developing community policing to bridge the gap between the civilians and the police will be initiated by the Jammu and Kashmir police.

The police here have started interaction with villagers and people of residential colonies, and are involving more youth to report crime and any unsocial activity in the Valley.

"The biggest advantage is that the regular interaction would prevent the kind of confrontation on the streets that we had seen in 2010," a senior police officer told IANS.

"We are hoping that a new bridge would be built between the police and the civilians," the officer said.

"The Kashmir scene has been successful. We have been visiting the villagers, talking directly to the youth in the villages and the streets of towns, making them feel that we are friends, not adversaries," Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Zone) S.M. Sahai told IANS.

Sahai's reaching out to the people has been greatly appreciated.

"But this is not something that can be done overnight. The natural ingredients are the people, their cooperation and image of the policeman," the officer in Jammu said.

The foot patrol is a known technique of the community policing, but we are going beyond that, the officer added.
