Panaji:
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
Tuesday won a simple majority in the Goa assembly elections with
21 seats, and was poised to form the government with alliance
partner Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP).
The combine trounced the ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress
Party (NCP) alliance in the 40-member Goa legislative assembly.
While the BJP won 21 seats, its partner MGP won three seats.
This is the first time that the BJP has won a simple majority in
assembly polls here.
In the stunning results, all four members of the Alemao family, who controversially got to
contest as Congress-Nationalist Congress Party candidates, lost the Goa assembly elections.
Brothers Churchill and Joaquim Alemao, who were cabinet ministers,
were defeated in Navelim and Cuncolim respectively -- to Avertano
Furtado (independent) and Rajan Naik (BJP).
Churchill Alemao's daughter Valanka lost in Benaulim to Caitu
Fernandes of Goa Vikas Party (GVP).
Joaquim Alemao's son Yuri lost in Sanguem to Bharatiya Janata
Party's Subhash Phaldesai.
The candidature of the Alemao family had caused outrage in the
party ranks as well as civil society groups.
Churchill Alemao, a former chief minister, has been booked for
smuggling and has been detained under the National Security Act.
Goa Vikas Party (GVP), a regional party, has won two seats, while
one independent has emerged victorious.
Goa voted March 3 for a 40-member assembly.
