Dalit land remains loyal to Mayawati

Tuesday March 06, 2012 01:30:39 PM, IANS

Agra: Agra, the Dalit capital of northern India, Tuesday dominantly stood by Chief Minister Mayawati even as her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) suffered blows elsewhere in Uttar Pradesh.

As counting of the millions of votes cast in the seven-phase elections continued, BSP candidates gave a good fight all across the region.

In Etmadpur assembly seat, outgoing BSP legislator Dharam Pal appeared set to trounce Baba Hardev Singh, the state president of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).

In the Agra Rural and Fatehpur Sikri constituencies too, BSP candidates were ahead of the rivals.

In Agra South, Agra North and Agra Cantonment, the BSP had taken on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) although the latter could end up winning the three city seats.

Political pundits said the BSP was likely to finish second wherever it lost in Agra region.
