Peace Party of India stamps its presence in UP politics with election win

Wednesday March 07, 2012 11:32:22 AM, ummid.com & Agencies

Lucknow: Even as Samajwadi Party stormed to power in Uttar Pradesh due to the strong and tactical support the party received from the Muslim community, Peace Party of India (PPI) - a little known and newly formed political party, stamped its presence in Uttra Pradesh politics by winning four seats in the assembly elections.

The PPI president, Dr. Ayub has won the Khalilabad seat and Akhilesh Singh won one of the five seats in Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency represented in the Lok Sabha by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Ironically, the Congress lost all the Raeli Bareli assembly seats with the remaining four going to the Samajwadi Party (SP).

The other PPI winners are Kamal Yusuf Mallik, who won  from Doomariyaganj and Aneesurrehman winning from Kanth.

Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal, an ally of the Peace Party, won from Rohaniya in Varanasi.

Formed in 2008, the Peace Party of India (PPI) was born with the intent of pushing a member of the Muslim community to the chair of chief minister. The Congress had at the time alleged that this was a move by Mayawati to split the Muslim vote in the state between rivals Congress, SP and PPI, which would eventually benefit her party.

Preliminary election results show that the Peace Party of India (PPI) has performed remarkably in the very first assembly election it fought after its formation. Earlier, the party had fought the parliamentary elections in 2009.
