Kanpur:
A sub-inspector and a constable of Uttar Pradesh police were shot
at and critically wounded inside a police station by a drunken
youth here early Friday, police said.
Sub-inspector Devendra Singh was shot at twice in the head by a
youth at the Naubasta police station where he is the station
officer. He was rushed to the Regency Hospital where he is
battling for life, police spokesman said.
The constable injured in the firing is in serious condition but
out of danger.
Police officials told IANS the incident took place around
midnight. The youngster, whom Singh had chided after complaints by
his father that he used to create a ruckus in the house, barged
into the police station and, before any one could understand what
was happening, whipped out his revolver and shot Singh, police
said.
In a bid to escape, he also shot at the constable on duty. The
youngster was overpowered by other security personnel and
arrested, police said.
The profusely bleeding policemen were rushed to the hospital where
Singh is in critical condition while the other cop is in the ICU
but out of danger.
The incident has sent shockwaves in the police establishment as
this is a rare instance when an official was attacked inside the
police station.
