Hyderabad: The old
city of Hyderabad was tense Tuesday, a day after communal clashes
over flags being burnt left 10 people injured.
There was no untoward incident since Tuesday morning, a police
official said, adding that 17 people were arrested for the
violence that broke out late Monday in Kulsumpura area of the
city.
The violence, which broke out after unidentified people set ablaze
religiously significant flags, resulted in 10 people, including
three policemen, being injured. Five shops were also set ablaze.
An assistant commissioner of police was among those injured.
People gathered on streets in Kulsumpura locality and indulged in
stone pelting. Thereafter, tension spread to Sabzimandi, Dhoolpet,
Mangalhat, Ziaguda, Jhirra, Karwan and other adjoining localities.
Police contingents were rushed to the area to bring the situation
under control.
Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, who is on a visit to Medak
district, reviewed the situation over phone with Home Minister
Sabita Indra Reddy and Director General of Police Dinesh Reddy.
The home minister said the government would deal firmly with those
trying to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere in the city. She said
the police were taking all steps to maintain law and order.
There was tension near the police commissioner's office at
Basheerbagh in the heart of the city when leaders and workers of
the Bharatiya Janata Party, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad,
Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and other organisations staged a noisy
protest, demanding action against those involved in the violence.
Police arrested senior BJP leaders Bandaru Dattatreya, Baddam Bal
Reddy and others.
The communally sensitive old city and other areas in the city have
been witnessing sporadic incidents with some groups trying to stop
cattle being brought from outside the city for sacrifice on
Eid-ul-Azha.
While the BJP and other organisations alleged that several cows
were slaughtered on the occasion of the Eid, Majlis-e-Ittehadul
Muslimeen (MIM) accused police of not taking any action against
those trying to disturb peace and communal harmony.
The city had also witnessed such incidents after Eid-ul-Azha last
year when some youths of a particular community were attacked in
separate incidents. Police had arrested about a dozen activists of
Hindu Vahini, who admitted that they carried out the attacks to
take revenge for the cow slaughter.
