Dubai: Egypt’s al-Nasr
football club has elected a woman on Saturday as its new
president, in the first case of its kind by an Egyptian or Arab
club, a media report said.
Women previously headed sports federations in various Arab states,
but the election of Sahar Abdul Haq as a club’s president was
unprecedented in the region, reported Dubai's leading media house
Al Arabiya.
Sahra, who competed against five men, won 2,219 votes out of the
total 4,265. She beat her closest rival by 900 votes.
Talikng to Al Arabiya Sahar said
she was the fourth women ever to head a football club in the
world. Her claim would not be verified.
Sahar, the sister of club’s former president, pledged to work help
the club ascend to Egyp’s Premier League division. The club is
currently playing the country's first division.
