New Delhi:
Doordarshan - an Indian public service broadcaster and a division
of Prasar Bharati, is receiving flaks from the Muslim community
after the telecast of a recipe containing pork meat on its Urdu network.
In the program on DDU Urdu's TV
series 'Taste ki Baat Hai', the Doordarshan on Tuesday
showed its viewers the recipe containing pork meat and said the
food tastes delicious and good after it is cooked.
The program sent shock waves among
its viewers who are mostly the Muslims.
"It's ridiculous and intimidating.
Any program on TV or another media is designed for the targeted
viewers. Since the DD Urdu, is mostly viewed by Muslims, showing a
recipe having pork as ingredient is shocking", Athar Shazan of
Citizens for Development & Peace (CDP) said while talking to
ummid.com.
Pork consumption is prohibited under
Islam.
"Its true that DD Urdu is not for
the Muslims alone. But it is also true that most of its viewers
are Muslims. Hence watching such a program on DD Urdu is painful",
Prof Akhatrul Wasey of Jamia Millia Islamia has been quoted as
saying in the media.
"This is something that is related
to our religious sentiments. The Doordarshan should have shown
some kind of responsibility", Prof Wasey who heads the Department
of Islamic Studies, said.
Similar feelings are also expressed
by others. Prof Sadique, former head of Department of Urdu, Delhi
University said that the Doordarshan has acted in irresponsible
manner by telecasting the show. "It should have been more careful
in selecting its program", he said.
Prof Ali Ahmed Fatmi, former head of
Department of Urdu, Allahabad University was also critical of the
DD Urdu. "We are liberal in our approach and are in favour of
freedom of expression. But, telecasting such a program on DD Urdu
is harmful for its reputation", he said.
Though Doordarshan's DD Urdu is very
popular among the Muslims, it faces opposition and hurdles are
deliberately created to stop it from smooth functioning.
