New Delhi: The vigil has been stepped up in Tihar Jail to pre-empt any attack on Pakistani inmates in the wake of the brutal assault on Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh in a Pakistani jail.

"Jail superintendents have been asked to keep a strict vigil on other inmates so that no one can hurt Pakistani inmates," a senior jail official told IANS.

According to the official, jail staff have been asked to segregate the Pakistani inmates from Indian inmates.

Foreign inmates are put in separate groups in cells.

Around 16 Pakistanis are lodged in Tihar's nine sub-jails, the official added.

India's biggest prison located in west Delhi three-tier security cover. The outer security is under the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) while the inner rings are manned by the Tamil Nadu Special Policemen and Delhi Jails security officers.

The Tamil Nadu Police have been asked to keep a constant vigil on the Pakistani inmates' cells and surveillance has been increased, the official said.

Sarabjit was admitted to Lahore's Jinnah hospital after being assaulted by fellow prisoners in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat prison Friday. Doctors said that he was in a coma and his condition was "critical".
