Law Minister Ashwani Kumar too shown door: Report

Friday May 10, 2013 10:57:37 PM, ummid.com & Agencies

New Delhi: Hours after the reports claiming the resignation of Railway Minister Pawan Kumar made headlines, a media report claimed that Law Minister Ashwani Kumar too has resigned.

Ending speculation on their fate, Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and Law Minister Ashwani Kumar resigned on Friday evening. They were given marching orders three hours after Congress president Sonia Gandhi met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Indian Express report a couple of minutes before on it website.

Law Minister Ashwani Kumar had been in the eye of a storm for vetting the CBI report on coal block allocations. The CBI had admitted to changes in its report when it filed an affidavit to the Supreme Court which took a strong exception to the Minister's act.

Bansal, under a cloud after his nephew was arrested by the CBI for accepting a bribe of Rs.90 lakh for getting a plum Railway Board post to a senior official, is believed to have been asked by the Congress leadership to step down, the sources said.

The indication that Bansal's fate was sealed came Friday when Congress spokesperson Bhakta Charan Das told reporters: "We will not tolerate if anybody is found mired in corruption."

Amid intense speculation over Bansal's fate Congress chief Sonia Gandhi met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his official residence in the evening.
