Nagpur/Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Friday while turning down the opposition demand to remove the outrageous statement against the Jamiat-e-Ulema from the house proceedings supported a probe into the allegations levelled by the BJP MLA.
Defending BJP MLA Ashish Shelar, Fadnavis also said he (Shelar) did not say Jamiat-e-Ulema is a 'terrorist organisation'.
"We will however make a probe into the allegations made by him against the Jamiat-e-Ulema and its office bearers", he said in the Maharashtra assembly.
Fadnavis statement in the house came after All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Waris Pathan raised a point of order and demanded from the government to remove Ashish Shelar's allegations about the Jamiat-e-Ulema and the allegations made by him against the Jamiat office bearers.
"Ashish Shelar has tried to defame an organisation which is providing legal and other aids to poor victims and the weeker section of the society. His allegations have angered the Muslim community across the country. They should be removed from the house proceedings", Pathan demanded.
On Pathan's demand, Shelar stood and said he never said that the Jamiat-e-Ulema is a terrorist organisation.
Outside the house, Muslim community leaders belonging to different groups and organisations condemned the BJP MLA's controversial statement about the Jamiat-e-Ulema and challenged the government to ban the Jamiat-e-Ulema as demanded by BJP MLA Ashish Shelar.
"I dare you to ban the Jamiat-e-Ulema", Mahmood Madani, former MP and General Secretary of the Jamiat-e-Ulema said while talking to reporters in Deoband.
"Those who do not have any contribution in India's freedom struggle are making ridiculous and outrageous demands. I challenge the government to ban the Jamiat-e-Ulema", he said.
Darul-Uloom Rector Mufti Abul Qasim Nomani too cricised the BJP MLA's statement and termed it 'inflammatory'.
"The history of the India's freedom struggle is incomplete without the Jamiat-e-Ulema. Any demand to ban such an organisation will be against the secualr values of the country", he said.
The Jamiat-e-Ulema Maharashtra too condemned Shelar's allegations and said the Jamiat has helped victims irrespective of their religion.
"Along with Muslims, the Jamiat has helped some Hindu accused also who were framed in wrong cases", Jamiat legal advisor Shahid Nadeem Ansari said while talking to ummid.com.
He also said Gulzar Azmi is the Secretary of the Jamiat-e-Ulema Legal Cell whereas Mustaqueem Azmi is its president. The two are not brothers as claimed by Shelar.
"They have no link with Chhota Shakeel or his gang. They are also not brothers", he said.
He also said 30% of the Jamiat's Education Aid goes to Hindus.
He also said that the Jamiat is not providing any legal aid to Abu Jindal, the accused in the 26/11 terror case, as claimed by Shelar.
"Shelar's allegations are bundle of lies. It can be verified from the court documents that the Jamiat has not provided any legal to Jindal", he said.
