Malegaon: A sea of humanity came out on roads in Malegaon Thursday to have a glimpse of Hyderabad MP and President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Chief Asaduddin Owaisi who was in the Muslim dominated textile city in North Maharashtra to campaign for the party candidate.
Hundreds of people, mainly youngsters, lined up on both the sides of the Mumbai-Agra highway and waited for hours to greet the AIMIM leader, known for his spirited speeches on Muslim issues in and outside of the parliament.
"He is my leader. He is the only leader who raises voice against the communal forces" 19-year-old Syfiyan Saifi said.
Saifi said he was waiting since 11:30 a.m. to greet Owaisi, and it was 01:50 p.m. when he actually came to his area. He was glad that Owaisi stopped to handshake with him and his two other friends.
As against the normal practice when political leaders ride on SUVs or open jeeps for road shows, Owaisi was walking even though it was immensely hot in the city with people standing on both sides of roads.
Holding microphone in one hand and raising the other to reply the greetings and wishes of the people, Owaisi stopped and walked to bystanders to have a talk and appealed them to vote for the party candidate.
"If Yadavs can have their own party, Hindus can have BJP and Shiv Sena, Dalits can have own party, why not Muslims? We are seeking your votes to restore our lost glory. Give us a chance if you want to see the difference" he would say while meeting the people.
He started his road show from Khyaban-e-Neshat chowk at around 11:00 a.m. Walking from here he crossed Chandanpuri Gate then to Belbag, Khusmadpura, Aman Chowk, Azad Nagar, Jamitus Salehat Road, Sulaimani Chowk, to reach Mushawerat Chowk at around 01:00 p.m.
After crossing Mushawerat Chowk, Owaisi stopped at Badi Makkah Masjid to offer Zuhur prayers. After prayers, he proceeded to Old Agra Road and then to Kusumba Road, Aisha Nagar and finally to AIMIM office at Salam Chacha Road.
Though part of the traffic on the Mumbai-Agra highway was diverted, the buses and other vehicles had to wait for hours before the route was cleared of the huge crowd that was gathered to see Owaisi.
Owaisi is also scheduled to address a public meeting at Azeez Kallu Stadium later in the evening. A week before, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar had addressed a huge rally on the same ground.
This is the first time AIMIM is contesting the state elections in Maharashtra scheduled for October 15. The AIMIM already has a strong base in Hyderabad and Telangana.
Earlier, the AIMIM made inroads into Maharashtra when it won 13 seats in Nanded civic elections.
