Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh Saturday suspended IPS Officer Himanshu Kumar for indiscipline, days after he accused the newly formed government of discriminating against the policemen belonging to Yadav caste.
"Himanshu Kumar has been suspended for indiscipline" Deputy Chief Minister Uttar Pradesh Keshav Prasad Maurya said.
In a series of tweets posted on March 22, the 2010-batch IPS officer had alleged that seniors in the department are targeting subordinates with the Yadav surname. Kumar deleted the tweets hours after they led to a storm.
Uttar Pradesh police later ordered a probe.
The deleted tweet said, "There is now a rush among senior officers to suspend/send to reserve lines all police personnel who have 'Yadav' surname."
In another tweet, Himanshu said, "Why DGP office forcing officers to punish people in the name of caste?"
Later, Himanshu put out another tweet saying, "Some people have misunderstood my tweet. I support the initiative of the Government."
The debate over the issue however escalated, after former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav joined the row, saying “Only police officers with ‘special’ castes are being transferred or suspended”.
