Amman: The British embassy in Amman recently announced the arrival of Lawrence of Abdoun, a cat rescued from the streets of Jordan.
Palmerston, the chief mouser and top cat at the Foreign Office in London, appointed Lawrence of Abdoun as his first overseas representative, according to royanews.tv.
No doubt Lawrence will be expected to use his powers of purr-suasion to further his country’s interests here in Jordan.
But that’s not the end of the tail. The diplocat, a former resident of the Humane Centre for Animal Welfare, will be carrying out a range of purr-fessional duties but his main task is head mouse catcher.
And he is also handling a twitter account. "Delighted to be chosen as @diplomog Palmerston’s envoy in Amman. Here I am after a tough interview with @edwardoakden", Lawrence of Abdoun tweeted soon after arrival in Amman.

In another tweet, Lawrence of Abdoun said, "Huge thanks to the Humane Centre for Animal Welfare for looking after me so well. Settling in nicely to my new home."

Lawrence of Abdoun has over 1,240 followers on Twitter, and his profile reads, "Diplocat, mouser, former resident of the Humane Centre for Animal Welfare. @diplomog's first overseas envoy, based at British Embassy Amman."
Lawrence in DiploCat's name reminds Lawrence of Arabia - a 1962 epic historical drama film based on the life of T. E. Lawrence. Born on August 16, 1888, in Caernarvonshire, Wales, T.E. Lawrence served in the British military, becoming involved in Middle Eastern affairs and playing a key role in the Great Arab Revolt.
