Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday met Crown Prince of Bahrain Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and other prominent members of the royal family.

On his first visit abroad as Congress President, Rahul Gandhi also addressed a gathering of business leaders of Indian origin.

Rahul Gandhi is accompanied by Shashi Tharoor, Sam Pitrida, Milind Deora and some other Congress leaders.

"Had a good meeting with Crown Prince of Bahrain, H.R.H. Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. We discussed a variety of issues of interest to India and Bahrain", Rahul Gandhi tweeted after meeting Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince of Bahrain.

While in Bahrain on Monday, Rahul Gandhi also met Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Foreign Minister of Kingdom of Bahrain and a prominent member of the royal family.

Rahul Gandhi, who is visting Bahrain as state guest, is also expected to meet King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Rahul Gandhi was also the Chief Guest at the Biennial International Convention of GOPIO (Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin, a global networking platform for Indian businessmen) held in Manama on Monday. Delegates from 65 countries are participating in the event

Congress said Gandhi's visit is part of his interactions with Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs). Gulf countries have the biggest Indian diaspora of more than 35 lakh.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi was welcomed by a large number of supporters when he landed at the Bahrain Airport

In a message posted on Twitter before he left for Bahrain, Rahul Gandhi had said, "NRIs are the true representatives of our soft power and the brand ambassadors of our nation across the globe. Looking forward to meeting and addressing fellow countrymen in Bahrain tomorrow."
