Karnal Mosque Attacked

Karnal (Haryana): A group of men allegedly thrashed some people, who were offering Salath (also called as Namaz or prayers) at a mosque in Haryana's Karnal on Thursday night. The victims alleged that a group of 20-25 people walked in, vandalized the mosque, broke speakers and thrashed those offering Namaz.

"We were offering Namaz like all other days, and suddenly a group of 20-25 people walked in and attacked us. We were threatened. Those people told us that if we offer Namaz again, we will be killed", news agency ANI quoted Muhammad Imran, one of the victims, as saying.

Another victim said, "We had done nothing other than offering our daily prayers, but we were attacked and our mosque was vandalized, we demand justice."

Haryana was recently in news when Hindu extremists had forcibly stopped Muslims from offering Friday prayers on open spaces.

Members of Sanyukt Hindu Sangharsh Samiti - an umbrella body of the local units of 12 Hindutva groups including the Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Shiv Sena, Hindu Jagran Manch and the, Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Kranti Dal said Muslims cannot offer prayers in open spaces without permission.

“Muslims need to take permission from the authorities to offer namzzs in open spaces,” Rajeev Mittal, National Coordinator of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Kranti Dal said.

Friday afternoon prayers are offered in open spaces and grounds at some places because the mosques fail to accommodate large number of people. Moreover, most of the Muslim localities where prayers were forcibly stopped do not have enough mosques. Local Muslims say their applications to build moques are pending approvals since last many years.

Meanwhile, Kunjpura Station House Officer Rajkumar Ranga said that an investigation has been launched into the latest incident of attacks on Muslim worshippers on Thursday night.

"We have been informed of the matter and we have already started an investigation. We have received some names and we will investigate. We have also informed the senior authorities regarding the incident," he told ANI.
