
Lucknow: In a photo-finish to the keenly watched Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP on Friday took a sweet revenge on the opposition by ensuring victory of all its nine candidates, days after it lost two crucial seats in the Lok Sabha bypolls in the state.
The remaining seat went to the Samajwadi Party in the polls marred by cross-voting from both the sides, which led to the defeat of the BSP candidate Bhim Rao Ambedkar in the prestigeous battle of ballots, touted as a test for the new-found bonhomie between the parties headed by Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati.
While the ruling BJP was sure of bagging eight of the 10 Rajya Sabha seats, the Samajwadi Party fielded Jaya Bachchan and the BSP Bhimrao Ambedkar for the remaining 02 seats. As the parties totted up the numbers, BSP MLA Anil Singh indicated that he had cross-voted in favour of the BJP, saying "I am with Maharaj-ji", a reference to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
“I voted for BJP, don't know about the rest”, he added.
There were 11 candidates for 10 Rajya Sabha seats election of which was held in Uttar Pradesh. As many as 37 first preference votes were needed for each seat. The BJP has enough MLAs to win eight seats comfortably. The Samajwadi Party has 47 lawmakers, enough to win one seat.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has a total of 18 MLAs in the state assembly and needed 03 more votes even after the support from 08 MLAs of SP, 07 MLAs of Congress and 01 MLA of Ajit Singh's RLD to win the election.
However, after counting of votes, BSP's Ambedkar bagged 32 votes while the Independent candidate, Anil Aggarwal got 22 votes. With none making it to 37, it fell onto second preference votes, in which the BSP was outnumbered.
Besides Anil Singh of BSP, Samajwadi Party's Nitin Agarwal, who had switched sides after his father quit the party and joined the BJP recently, also voted for the BJP candidate.
The Rajya Sabha elections were held to elect 10 seats from Uttar Pradesh, 06 each from Bihar and Maharashtra, 05 each from West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, 04 each from Gujarat and Karnataka 03 each from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Rajasthan, 02 from Jharkhand, and 01 seat each from Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
According to the final result announced by the Election Commission, BJP won 28 seats, Congress won 10 seats, Trinamool Congress won 04, BJD won 03, TRS won 03, JD 02, TDP 02, JD(U) 02 and YSRCP 01 seat. 04 seats were won by independent and others.
