London: A record number of Muslims were elected in the British General Elections 2019 results of which were announced Friday.
According to the final election results, as many as 19 Muslims won the UK elections - an increase of 04 from the last election in 2017.
Of the total 19 Muslim MPs in the British Parliament, 15 belong to the Labour Party and the rest 04, including Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid, are Conservatives.
Besides Sajid Javid, some of the other Muslim MPs in UK are Mohammad Yasin, Rushanara Ali, Tahir Ali, Yasmin Qureshi, Imran Hussain, Zarah Sultana, Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, Afzal Khan, Saqib Bhatti, Nadhim Zahawi and Imran Ahmad-Khan.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative Party won 365 seats with a vote share of 43.6 percent. On the other hand the Labour Party could win only 203 seats registering a vote share of 32.2 percent.
The 2019 UK election also saw a record number of 220 women elected to the House of Commons. This trend was also seen in the number of Muslim women, with 10 winning seats.
List of Muslim MPs in UK is steadily increasing. In 2015, there were 13 Muslim MPs in UK, in 2010 there were only 08 and in 2005 the UK Parliament has only 04 MPs.
Despite this, Muslims are still not proportionally represented in parliament as only 3 percent of the UK’s 650 MPs are Muslim, whilst the country’s Muslim population stands at around 5 percent.
For the first time in UK electoral history, more than 70 candidates of Pakistani origin were given tickets by Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats. Of them, 20 contested as Conservative candidates whereas 19 fought the UK election on Labour Party ticket.
