Malegaon (Maharashtra): Hundreds of Muslims, joined by a good number of Hindus, are marching in Malegaon Thursday to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Ove two dozen organisations and rights bodies have given a call for a nationwide protest against the controversial law on December 19 which coincides with the martyrdom of Ram Prasad Bismil and Shaheed Ashfaqullah Khan.
"The fascist Modi government is hell bent on stripping us of the Indian citizenship. We won't allow this", a protester said while talking to ummid.com.
"Our anchestors had given blood for this country. The contribution of Muslims for India is more than any other in the country. Strangely, the people who have never contributed positevely for the country and stayed away from all national movements are talking about desh bhakti and nationalism. It is high time to expose them", another said.
Azaadi Slogans in Malegaon Rally
'The Azaadi solgan, became famous by Kanhaiya Kumar and JNU students and which is now popular among the youngsters has also made its way to Malegaon.
Thousands of people holding placards slaming the controversial law and shouting slogans against Narenda Modi government are also raising Azaadi slogans.
The protest rally started today morning at around 10:15 am from the historic Malegaon Fort and is now peacefully slowly moving in different roads and streets of the city.
All schools and colleges are giving a deserted look as students take a leave to register their protest against the Citizensip Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC).
"Amit Shah has clearely said in the Parliament that CAB will be succeeded by NRC. His statement exposes the real motives of this government", a student said.
A number of proesters also said they were not against anyone being given citizenship. However, they said, they are worried about the imminent consequences when the law is combined with the NRC.
"We are not against if any person, whichever religion, caste or community he or she belongs, is given the Indian citizenship. But, the present government is playing with the constitituion of India and is attempting to divide the nation for its politics", he added.
"The BJP leaders are talking about "building the nation". But, in reality they are "burning the nation" and the world is watching", another student said.
The organisations that have given the call for today's protest march had earlier on Wednesday night organised a massive public meeting in front of Shahidon Ki Yadgaar, Qedwai Road.
Thousands of people attended the meeting depsite chilling cold. A number of non-Muslims were seen sitting on the stage with Saffron headgears to condemn Prime Minister Modi's provocative comment that "those protesting against the law can be recognised by their dresses".
