Bengaluru: Hitting out at the present dispensation which is routinely accusing the people of the country protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 of maligning the image of India, noted historian Ramchandra Guha Thursday said the government's actions were in fact bringing a bad name to the country.
"Dear Police Commissioner, your Government's decision has brought disgrace to this "international destination"", Ramchndra Guha wrote on Twitter.
Guha's comments came after Bengaluru police chief Bhaskar Rao issued an appeal to the people to stay away from the protest.
"Request Bengalureans to co-operate maintain peace. This is an international destination where people have come from parts of the country and world to study and do economic activities. Let these protests and processions not mar daily life which has bearing on economic activity", the Commissioner said.
Responding to the police chief's comments, Ramchandra Guha further wrote, "This was to be a peaceful protest by citizens who wish to uphold the values of our Constitution. You have used a colonial-era law to suppress us and our voices."
Ramchandra Guha was earlier in the morning detained by the Bengaluru police with hundreds of others in different cities and towns of Karnataka.
According to NDTV, Guha was manhandled by the police while he was speaking with the TV crew and pushed to a police van mid-interview.
People in Karnataka were protesting against Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 which defines the citizenship criteria on the basis of religions and countries.
More than two dozen organisations of the country have given a call for protest against the controversial law on December 19 - the day which coincides with the martyrdom day of Shaheed Ashakullah Khan and Ram Prasad Bismil.
"If not today when will you stand up for your country? Today is the day when Ramprasad Bismil, Asfaqullah Khan, Roshan Singh gave away their lives for India", National President of Swaraj India, Yogendra Yadav, said while appealing people to join the Citizen's March against the "divisive" Citizenship Act.
